“All companies with over 250 employees had to report the gender pay gap within their organisation by the 5th of October. At Women in Transport, we are disappointed to learn that the average gender pay gap for all firms has not improved since 2019-20, remaining at 10.4%.
“This average pay gap is a perfect illustration of the lack of gender diversity among the senior positions in most companies. Data submitted by key transport employers (Department for Transport, Transport for London, Network Rail) last year shows this is a particular issue for the sector, and is something that came up in Women in Transport’s ‘Gender perceptions and experiences working in transport’ white paper released earlier this year. We found that 75% of women believed it was easier for men to progress in their career compared to women.
“It is also disappointing to see that the number of firms which reported their gender pay gap had decreased 11% from 2018-19. If we don’t fully understand the size of the problem, it becomes increasingly more difficult for us to tackle it effectively.
“In light of these figures, we would like to see the Government Equalities Office, in partnership with industry, carry out a concentrated campaign to help more women reach senior and board levels in all companies.” - Jo Field, President, Women in Transport
