We are excited to announce that we’re holding our first in-person event on a real life street in Glasgow! The past five years or so have seen a significant increase in the amount of attention being paid to the role of the built environment in meeting wider health and sustainability objectives, including addressing the increasingly publicised climate emergency. With the arrival of the global COP26 summit in November, Glasgow’s streets have never been more in the spotlight.
The Avenues Programme is a hugely ambitious public realm improvement programme aiming to completely redesign 17 key streets in the city centre, including the construction of new cycling and walking infrastructure. The pilot phase of the Avenues along Sauchiehall Street was completed in 2019 and will form the focus of the walking tour.
The Scotland hub are delighted to be joined by WiT member Isla Jackson, Director at Civic Engineers and Project Manager for Block A of the Avenues programme, who will lead a walking tour along Sauchiehall Street. Isla is a Chartered Structural Engineer with wide ranging experience working across the UK, North America and the Middle East. This event will be a chance to hear from her about her personal experience as a woman working in transport engineering and also to see the Sauchiehall Street public realm works through the eyes of an experienced structural engineer. This is a great opportunity to delve into the fascinating ‘behind the scenes’ world of street design and to ask all those niche questions you’ve never had a chance to ask.
The event will take place on Tuesday 31 August, meeting at 4pm outside Tinderbox at Charing Cross (24 Charing Cross Mansions, Glasgow G3 6UJ). The walking tour will last an hour and there will be an opportunity for informal socialising from 5pm for those that wish to stay and network. Delegate numbers will be limited to 10 and bookings will be taken on a first come, first served basis.
A risk assessment has been carried out however please note that the event will take place outside in a live street setting, so attendees should come prepared for potential adverse weather (this is Glasgow, after all) and with suitable footwear for walking up to 2km. This event is in compliance with current Covid-19 restrictions however it may be necessary to make alterations nearer the time if regulations change.
This event is open to all Women in Transport members. Registration will be open until 29th of August.
