For many women entrepreneurs, working in logistics has never been a career path they’ve seen themselves in. And of course not. Traditionally, it’s been a heavily male-dominated field yet some women have benefitted from an exclusive opportunity in partnership with Amazon:
The Delivery Service Partner Programme
As a partner of Women in Transport, Amazon are dedicated to enhancing the representation of women entrepreneurs and bridging the significant gender gap in business ownership.
One of those unique opportunities is the DSP programme, which allows entrepreneurs to establish their own delivery business with a low-cost investment and to deliver Amazon packages while they run a team of drivers and vans. It’s a partnership that allows successful applicants to make use of Amazon’s 25+ years logistics experience, technology and exclusive deals to run a business of their very own. It’s a perfect opportunity for women like Kemi, Huri, Marcicarmen, Aurelia and Marila, to be the boss of their own lives and change the image of an industry mostly dominated by men.
In this video, these women from across the UK and EU, have lead that very change. One aspect they all share is their lack of experience in the logistics industry – and indeed, that’s not a pre-requisite to apply for the DSP Programme. There are many transferrable skills that can qualify a person to be a strong candidate to run their own logistics business.
Take Kemi, for example. She used to work in London Transport. For Maricarmen, she worked in supermarket and clothing stores while Huri worked in admin at a logging company. They each wanted to take the leap into entrepreneurship and the DSP programme provided a low-risk step towards their goal. For mum Aurelia, she wanted to have more freedom in her schedule to be at home with her daughter.
Each of these women have found a work-life balance that’s enabled them to be leaders in their own right. For many of them, encouraging a team of drivers that they’ve contracted has lead them to think of their work like a family – and to all work together towards the same goals.
These women, just like so many potential candidates, are moving the dial on the logistics industry and are keen to see more women get involved.
