How long have you been involved with Women in Transport?
Over five years as a member, and nearly three as CS
Why did you join Women in Transport?
I was introduced to it by a Board Member, Angela Gainsford, and attended a typically-excellent panel discussion and networking event. I wanted to do something tangible to show support for EDI in the industry so joining and participating was ideal.
What do you enjoy most about being part of Women in Transport?
I always say the same thing - the networking! We can all support each other and the first step is meeting people, listening to their experiences and views, and learning from that, reflecting on our own journeys and, often I've found, recognising our privilege.
Current job title?
Director, Company Secretary and co-owner of Xanta Limited
What does your current job involve?
Wading through emails...managing the company, co-authoring bids, liaising with our consultants, and at this time of year, the dreaded Christmas card list!
What's the best thing about your job?
I work with very talented people, and as I'm not an engineer myself I've learnt a lot from those who are. I also take pride in the rail/public transport sector's green agenda green credentials.
How did you become involved in the transport industry?
Wow, that's a long one...I had actually qualified in law and been called to the Bar (yes, the gown and white wig bit) when I was invited to become a consultant for a now-defunct firm, and I decided to do that "for a while". That while has now lasted 25 years.
What do you like about working in transport?
As I mentioned, I think that mass transport is part of the solution to climate change, especially when it's emission-free at the point of use. The ability of the world's great cities to move millions around daily still takes my breath away and I'm glad to have any role in it.
What are you most proud of?
Workwise, I'd say starting and maintaining a successful company these past 16 years, and having worked with and met so many interesting and talented people. Truthfully, however, that takes a backseat to my pride in my amazing wife and son who I'm lucky enough to have in my life.
