Women in Transport Scotland event 'Re-purposing Transport Assets'

The Scotland Hub of Women in Transport was delighted to host another technical webinar this October, looking at the fascinating topic of re-purposing transport assets.

Joined by members from all over the UK, Regional lead Mailys Garden welcomed three fantastic speakers:

  •  Claire Higson – Senior Engineer (Design & Property Services), Dundee City Council

  • Rachael Murphy – Strategy Manager, SEStran

  • Sophie Battye - Assistant Group Manager, Glasgow City Council

Claire presented on the Dundee Green Transport Hub and Spokes, the transformation of the Bell Street Multi-storey carpark into a new centre for active travel and electric vehicle infrastructure, facilitating the transformation of the northwest of the city centre. Dundee City Council is reducing the 930 spaces to 440, a large number of which will be fitted with Electric Charging Points. The new spaces unlocked will be home for solar panels and battery storage, as well as public and shared bike storage and event space. The hub will also have the potential to accommodate cargo-bike rentals and e-bikes.

Rachael spoke about the possibility for the Edinburgh trams to take a greater role in reducing congestion. By creating first and last mile cycle logistics hubs along the route, and sidings at key points so as to not disturb passenger services, goods could be brough in and out again, minimising hundreds of van journeys per day.

Sophie concluded the session by presenting a range of road space re-allocation initiatives in Glasgow, highlighting the historical significance of the 1965 Highway plan for Glasgow which recommended pedestrianising the main shopping streets and restrictions on parking. Amongst these intiatives, some new active travel corridors, secure cycle parking facilities, Liveable Neighbourhoods programme, Behaviour change events and Mobility Hubs.
