Warmer weather has finally arrived, and with it comes the summer session of the Women in Transport book club. Based on member votes, we will discuss Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo. A winner of the Booker Prize in 2019, the novel creatively weaves together the stories of twelve different characters. Most of the stories are told by black British women yet the characters range widely in terms of age and circumstances. Each story offers a unique perspective on family, friendship, relationships, and feminism.
‘A great novel about womanhood and modern Britain.’ - Booker Prize committee
We will explore the book's themes through group discussion, including:
How does the author create unique voices for each character?
If you were able to meet one of the twelve main characters, whom would you meet?
Across some of the stories, the same situation is told from different perspectives. How did this retelling affect your interpretation?
Which social or political issues do you feel you are now more knowledgeable about after reading the book?
All members are welcome, even if you’ve never participated in a book club previously. If you are curious about our previous book discussions, check out these blog posts from past sessions. We are currently planning for quarterly meetings so if you are interested but can't make this session, you are welcome to join us at the next one.
The book club is only open to Women in Transport members. If you are not a member of Women in Transport and would like to join or find out more, click here.
