For the autumn session of the Women in Transport Book Club we asked members what they are most interested in reading. The results are in - the most in demand topics include learning from inspirational public figures, promoting diversity in the workplace, and developing leadership skills.
Based on this input, the autumn session will discuss Becoming by Michelle Obama. Her candid memoir reviews the life events, both big and small, that led her from Chicago to the White House, all told with her trademark grace, honesty, and kindness.
‘I’m an ordinary person who found herself on an extraordinary journey. In sharing my story, I hope to help create space for other stories and other voices, to widen the pathway for who belongs and why.’
We will explore the book's themes through group discussion, including:
How much did you know about Michelle Obama before reading her memoir? What did you learn about her by reading this book?
Many people cite Obama’s relatability despite her fame and influential role. Did you feel this way? Why or why not?
Who were Obama’s mentors? How did they influence her life?
Obama writes, “I’ve never been a fan of politics, and my experience over the last ten years has done little to change that.” Did this surprise you?
What do you think of the idea of life in a constant state of evolution, or ‘becoming’?
All members are welcome, even if you’ve never participated in a book club previously. If you are curious about our previous book discussions, check out these blog posts from the spring and summer sessions. We are currently planning for quarterly meetings so if you are interested but can't make this session, you are welcome to join us in the winter.
The book club is only open to Women in Transport members. If you are not a member of Women in Transport and would like to join or find out more, click here.
