Scotland Hub: Meet the volunteers

Our volunteers are an integral part of our organisation and there are plenty of ways to get involved and help, from helping us making new connections, sharing ideas about future activities through to regular volunteering roles. We wouldn’t function without our dedicated team of volunteers that helps us run Women in Transport! Our industry wide network is open and inclusive, welcoming everyone who works in the transport sector. Our mission is to support the professional advancement of women working in the transport sector and we believe in promoting inclusion across the industry.

Find out a bit more about volunteers and why they enjoy running the Scotland Hub of Women in Transport.

Fiona Brown

I am a new member to Women in Transport and keen volunteer for the Scotland Hub.  I began a conversation with Sonya  (CEO of Women in Transport) a few years ago with regard to “doing something in Scotland” but I never managed to complete that.  So I am glad it happened anyway and I am delighted to jump on board now it has.  I am keen to extend my professional network through Women in Transport, progress my own career development and create a Scotland Hub which provides that for all members.

In my day job, I am Head of Strategic Transport Planning at Transport Scotland, with 18 years transport planning experience in both consultancy and Government. I live in Glasgow with my partner, son and dog.

Becki Cox

I’m a transport nerd, urbaphile and a passionate advocate for the importance of good urban design in creating safe streets for everyone. I’m currently a full-time PhD researcher at the University of Glasgow and occasional Living Streets Associate.

I have been a member of Women in Transport since 2017 and I’m hugely excited to be leading on the active travel element of the new Scotland hub.

Kattalin Atorrasagasti

I joined Women in Transport in 2020, and I am currently helping run the website and some event communications. Women in Transport arranged all the training for my role, so I have quickly learnt some very useful skills!

I have a keen interest in the circular economy, net zero carbon infrastructure and sustainable transport networks. I have worked in the aviation and transport industries for nearly 30 years, both in operational and consulting roles. In my spare time I also volunteer with a Scottish cycling charity, leading rides for women in Glasgow’s East End.

Diane Burke

I am an experienced and successful driver of big change, resulting in improved employee engagement, customer experience and commercial performance.  I have worked across a number of sectors including retail, media and transport

I have enjoyed leadership roles with a number of high-profile transport brands including Great North Eastern Railway and Heathrow Express, and I led the revival of the iconic GWR brand. I am passionate about customer experience and is able to engage and inspire colleagues through collaboration and building relationships across the organisation, in pursuit of a common vision.

I have recently moved back home to my beloved Scotland with my husband and two daughters and am enjoying my new role as Commercial Director at Caledonian MacBrayne.

Sue Hilder

As Glasgow City Council’s Outdoor Access Officer, I am involved in spatial planning and in the development and implementation of active travel and outdoor access policy. I advise the public, external bodies and colleagues on interpretation of public access legislation, and in particular on the protection and enhancement of the active travel and recreational paths network in Scotland’s largest City.

I believe that a fully integrated transport network is an essential component in our journey towards net zero, and this means embracing the needs of pedestrians, wheelers and cyclists. I have a background in rural policy and environmental sculpture and I am currently a Co-Convenor of the Scottish Outdoor Access Network and a board member of Greenspace Scotland.

Mailys Garden

I have been a member of Women in Transport for the past six years and a board member since 2017. I now lead the launch of the Scotland hub as I moved to Edinburgh in June 2020. I really enjoy meeting many people working across the transport sector in Scotland and understanding what activities Women in Transport can run here to have a positive impact.

In my day job I am an Associate at Momentum Transport Consultancy where I lead the development of access strategies for mixed-use regeneration projects. I thrive to devise approaches that put people at the centre of design and help creating better places through innovative mobility and servicing of complex urban spaces. I am also the transport representative for the City Property Association (CPA) Next Gen Committee and I was finalist of the 2019 Everywoman Transport & Logistics Awards for the ‘Customer/Passenger Leader category’ for women excelling in their role for customers/passengers in transport, logistics and freight.
