Women in Transport Book Club, session led by Shireen Ali-Khan, discussing Joeli Brearley‘s 'The Motherhood Penalty'

Women in Transport invite our members to join the latest book club session where we will be discussing 'The Motherhood Penalty' by Joeli Brearley

Our host Shireen Ali-Khan, Intersectionality Lead, Women in Transport and Specialist Consultant says;

“The Motherhood Penalty, written by Joeli Brearley, is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the issue of sexism that working mothers face. This book discusses how being a mother can negatively impact a career, and how this is particularly true for women.

Joeli Brearley goes beyond just highlighting the problem of sexism faced by working mothers. This book delves deeply into the societal factors that contribute to this issue and how they can be challenged. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the consequences motherhood has on a woman's career, including reduced pay and limited upward mobility. The valuable insights shared in this book provide a much-needed perspective on a significant social problem that deserves more attention. By reading The Motherhood Penalty, we can gain a better understanding of the experiences of working mothers and the systemic obstacles they face.

Brearley's writing is clear and precise, and she is able to make a compelling argument for the unfairness that working mothers face. Her research is well-documented and her examples are engaging and relatable.

The Motherhood Penalty offers valuable insights and solutions to this ongoing problem, and it's an important read for anyone who cares about gender equality in the workplace.”
