Research recently undertaken by the RTPI on Net Zero Transport highlighted the varying travel needs and patterns between men and women. For example, it was suggested that, typically, women drive less, walk more, use public transport and take on greater caring responsibilities that require greater flexibility in travel.
Despite the fact that transport projects and policies are often considered to equally benefit women and men, gender inequality in transport is poor. With only 22% of transport workers in the EU being women, how can we ensure that future transport design reflects the needs of women guaranteeing it is safe, affordable and accessible to the labour market, healthcare and education.

Lucy Yu is CEO at Octopus Energy's Centre for Net Zero, and Senior Adviser to Voi Technology with a focus on global policy and research. She has led operations, commercial, policy and research functions for several high-growth, globally renowned tech start-ups, and has a further decade of experience developing transport and technology policy and regulation for governments in the UK, Europe, and at the UN.
Her work has focused on future mobility, artificial intelligence, decarbonisation and the energy transition. She has written extensively on these topics for the tech press and peer-reviewed journals and has spoken widely including for Wired and SLUSH.
Joanna Ward, Freelance Transport Planner and Board Director at the Transport Planning Society
Joanna Ward is a highly experienced and motivated Transport Professional with a special interest in Sustainable and Active Transport solutions. She has worked in the transport sector for over 20 years and has proven track record working across the public, private and charity sector for a wide client base.
Jo is a Board Director of the Transport Planning Society as well as a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Cycling and Walking group and an active member of Women in Transport.
She is a strong advocate for walking and cycling and leads by example through her daily use those modes as well as public transport. She has written and presented extensively on the need for more diversity and inclusion in transport planning and governance.
Molly Hoggard & Marie Godward, Graduate Transport Planners at Mott MacDonald
Molly and Marie are both graduate transport planners from Mott MacDonald. Together with Laura Brooks they have created a platform to support transport professionals with guidance and resources to better understand gender equality issues in transportation, the Gender Equality in Transport Toolkit (GET-IT). They are encouraged that the transport industry wants to better incorporate gender mainstreaming and hope that their toolkit helps it to do so.
