Online Lunch & Learn - Challenging Gender Bias
Women in Transport is pleased to team up again with Balance Together for this Lunch & Learn session on challenging gender bias.
There are simply loads of stereotypes (including gender stereotypes), but, bias and stereotypes are closely related and often overlap. However, there are differences and this is important if we are to influence cultures and behaviour towards different genders.
Stereotypes can be described as preconceived ideas applied to an entire group of people, which tend to be used consciously, whereas bias can be described as a tendency towards a particular perspective and is more involuntary, generally referred to as unconscious, and invariably gets in the way of being able to be objective.
Unconscious bias has been called the enemy of equality! Unconscious biases at work cause aggressions, omissions, trust issues, missed opportunities, unfairness, and exclusions to name a few.
With gender biases popping up everywhere we need some tools to recognise common ones at work, and more importantly, ways to minimise or mitigate them.
This session will help participants to recognise unconscious biases in their role, team and organisation, and be part of a deeper exploration of two common ones in greater detail, including practical actions.
