Women in Transport Autumn Reception

Safety of Women on Public Transport

Women in Transport and WSP are pleased to announce our second face-to-face reception of 2022.

Join us for the Women in Transport Autumn Reception, sponsored by our partners WSP on Thursday 13th October 2022 at The Mailbox in Birmingham.

The theme for the reception is “Safety of Women on Public Transport”.

The reception will not only be an opportunity to network with friends and colleagues from the transport industry but will also include Keynote Speakers, a discussion on gender disparity and the opportunity to get involved with an interactive presentation.

Our Keynote Speaker for this reception is Keith Foley, the Strategic Growth Director, Transport for WSP in the UK.

Keith has worldwide experience of transport issues with significant knowledge of the public sector and has co-delivered research projects with a number of worldwide metros, chaired conference discussions and leads a number of projects for clients in challenging political and reputational environments. Keith’s twenty years’ experience in London Underground and Transport for London (TfL) includes leading London Underground's planning for the 2012 Olympic Games as Programme Sponsor and representing TfL at the Beijing Games. He also promoted the Northern Line Extension and Croxley Rail Link and was lead sponsor for the new S-stock walk-through trains on the Metropolitan, Circle, District and H&C lines. His final years at TfL involved leading London Underground’s change programme to deliver Night Tube services.

Susan Leadbetter will also present her award-winning study titled “A study on women’s personal safety in public transport in London” (where she heard from over 600 women across London who shared their experiences first hand), followed by an interactive Q&A session.

Susan is a Senior Consultant within the Liveable Places team at WSP, with seven years’ experience. She is passionate about improving safety within the built environment and is a qualified Road Safety Auditor; with a key interest of improving safety for Women and Girls. Following the tragedy of Sarah Everard in 2021, Susan undertook a study focussing on Women’s Safety on public transport which was recently awarded the CIHT Research Initiative of the Year 2022.

Susan’s presentation will cover:

•            Women’s safety perceptions and how they feel when travelling,

•            The impacts of sexual harassment, and

•            How transport planners and professionals can help improve safety for Women and Girls

After the formal session, we hope that you will join us for networking over drinks and nibbles.

This event is open to non-members so is a great opportunity to introduce your friends and colleagues to Women in Transport.
